What are essential oils? I’ll show you some great information that is great for beginners!

what are essential oils

Did You Know?

Essential oils have super-charged potency? That’s right! They are 50 to 70 times more powerful than herbs! In fact, just one drop of peppermint oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea.

The Top 3 Health Priorities We Face Today

1.) Muscles & Joint Aches: Most health priorities that we face today are due to internal cellular damage. This is simply our body’s response to some type of traumatic experience that happened physically (inside our outside your body)

It basically goes a lil something like this: we eat something, take some type of synthetic, or get an ouchie in some type of way and our body says, “Yo, What’s up with that?” Then it “gets us back” with redness, warmth, and tightness.

2.) Feeling Under the Weather: “Outside invaders” can really take a toll on your health. For example, we have good and bad guys in our small and large intestines. The good guys usually keep the bad in check and the two sides usually get along.

These micro-organisms actually help your body break down food and do other critical stuff. However, when we introduce toxic foods that are overly processed or if we don’t give our body the proper nutrition it needs, then the bad guys start to win the upper hand and your health takes a downturn.

3.) Low or No Energy: Feeling tired, drained, or just plain pooped is no fun. I used to eat candy and sugar, drink caffeine and soda, and overeat in order to self-help myself and feel better.

The effects of all this was temporary and caused me to “crash” down low again (think Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster ride). What’s even more important to understand is that all that junk that I fed my body caused me to not support my immune system and eventually increase my chances of catching something (see point #2 above).

What I Used To Think

I used to think that the oils I saw in the cupboards at my mom’s house were the same as essential oils. I mean they all have “oil” in the name (should be a no-brainer, right)? You know, olive oil, vegetable oil, soybean oil, sesame seed oil, etc.

Plus they all had a similar consistency, texture, and were from plants. Moreover, I knew that “organic” oil meant that it was “better” even though I couldn’t tell you how exactly how except that it costed more. We all know that if costs more than it must be of higher quality right (look at Apple products compared to PC).

As I learned more about essential oils, I found out that there was a BIG difference…

What Are Essential Oils Then?

Essential oils are extracted from plants by cold pressing the rinds (think squeezing an orange peel and seeing the mist) or by steam distillation (think mini hot sauna). Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds that are found in the leaves, bark, seeds, stems, roots, flowers, rind, and fruit of plants.

Essential oils are highly concentrated (like Orange Juice in the can, but even more concentrated), made up of hundreds of components (like a car), and help the body address airborne and external threats from a cellular level.

The purity of the oil is determined by its chemical constituents (think plant oil DNA). For example, high levels of carvacrol can cause the oil to be more irritating while low pressure and low temperature climates are the key to maintaining the purity, smell, and therapeutic value of the oil.

Essential Oil Quality & Purity Is Driven By

  • The part(s) of the plant that oil is extracted from
  • Where in the world the plant was grown
  • The type and condition of the soil used
  • If organic or chemical fertilizer is used on the plant or soil
  • Temperature of the plant’s surroundings
  • How high the plant is grown
  • Season of when the plant is harvested
  • How the oil is squeezed or steamed from the plant (using hands to squeeze or hot breath aren’t good ideas)

How My Results Make Feel More Empowered

I’ve used essential oils to help with boo boos, ouchies, head tension, stomach upset, sinus stuff, and a number of other health priorities. The key to remember is that it’s better to be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to your health.

For example, putting essential oils in my bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom make me WAAAY more likely to use them and I find myself using them in my food, drinks, when I wake up, and when I go to bed because of this.

Warning!

Essential oils are NOT a silver bullet that will save you from everything (we are not taking down a werewolf, although health priorities can sometimes feel like a beast of a problem).

I like to think that essential oils can help me feel more in control on improving my quality of life.

What would you like to improve about your health and feel more control over?

Time For A Lil Summary…

Essential oils are not just “important liquids,” they are oils that our body doesn’t produce (hence the “essential” part). What’s even more interesting is that essential oils can help you with muscle and joint health, boosting immunity, and energy when combined with a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating right, exercising, getting the proper rest, and managing stress better.
